Frequently Asked Questions
What happens if I get a new phone?
If you get a new phone, you’ll need to set up Microsoft Authenticator again. Before changing phones, it’s recommended to use the backup feature in the app settings. If you’ve already switched phones without backing up, contact Silver Lining Support, who can help reset your authentication methods.
Will Microsoft Authenticator work if I don’t have internet access?
Yes! Microsoft Authenticator generates codes locally on your device, so it works even without an internet connection. The time-based codes will continue to refresh every 30 seconds regardless of connectivity.
Is Microsoft Authenticator more secure than SMS verification?
Absolutely. SMS verification codes can potentially be intercepted through SIM swapping attacks or telecommunication vulnerabilities. Microsoft Authenticator generates codes directly on your device, eliminating the transmission risk.
Can I use Microsoft Authenticator for my personal accounts too?
Yes, Microsoft Authenticator works with personal Microsoft accounts, as well as many other services like Google, Facebook, Amazon, and any service that supports standard authenticator apps (TOTP).
How many accounts can I add to Microsoft Authenticator?
You can add virtually unlimited accounts to the Microsoft Authenticator app. The app organises them alphabetically, making it easy to find the account you need.
Will my battery drain faster with this app installed?
Microsoft Authenticator uses minimal battery and system resources. It only actively consumes power when you open the app to get a code or when you receive a verification notification.
Do I still need to remember my password?
Yes, Microsoft Authenticator is a second factor (“something you have”) that works alongside your password (“something you know”). You’ll still need to enter your password first, then use the authenticator app.
